What is Andropause?

Do men go through menopause? Andropause, also known as “male menopause”, is the change in male hormone levels due to aging. Andropause is a natural part of the male aging process, but luckily, there are ways to combat it, in order to age more gracefully and increase your quality of life.

With the decline in testosterone, some men experience symptoms that can include:

  • Tiredness
  • Weakness
  • Depression
  • Sexual problems
  • Lessened self-confidence

What Causes Andropause?

As men age, their testes, which are in charge of testosterone production, start producing less and less of the testosterone hormone. Testosterone is secreted less frequently by the Leydic cells. These cells, which are located in the testes, are in charge of producing most of the testosterone.

What are symptoms of Andropause?

If your testosterone levels are low, testosterone replacement therapy can help relieve symptoms such as:

  • Loss of interest in sex (decreased libido)
  • Infertility
  • Hot flashes
  • Depression
  • Fatigue
  • Gynecomastia (the development of breasts)

There are a number of indications that you are suffering from male menopause symptoms. Some of the most common symptoms include weight gain, a reduction of muscle mass, a loss of hair on the head and body, a decrease in day to day motivation, trouble remembering things, low sex drive, and erectile dysfunction. Other symptoms of Andropause include enlarged breasts, an increase in nervousness, and a loss of self confidence.

At what age do men get Andropause?

Andropause can start effecting men between the ages of 40 to 50 years old. You may not notice the effects that andropause is having on you until you reach about 50 years old. This is because around age 40, the testosterone hormone typically drops at a rate of about 1 percent per year. Because this process is so gradual, you may not experience serious symptoms until about age 50.

How Is Male Menopause Diagnosed?

To make the diagnosis of male menopause, the physician can:

  • Perform a physical
  • Talk to you about symptoms
  • Order certain tests to help rule out medical problems that may be contributing to your condition
  • Order blood tests to check your testosterone levels.

What can you do to combat Andropause?

There are many remedies that can increase a males testosterone, and decrease a males estrogen level.
